Depending on your design objective, you can use a rug to accentuate certain elements in a given space or to be the focal point of said space. To do this properly, however, you need to have the right size rug.

Rugs are available in a host of shapes and sizes, which makes the process of selecting the right size rug for a certain space a bit overwhelming. That being said, this post attempts to simplify your selection process by highlighting the different rug sizes for each room within a typical house.

Living Room

Selecting the perfect Southwestern rug size for your living room boils down to a couple of factors: layout options and room space. There will come a time when you’ll feel the need to change the layout of the room by rearranging your furniture, and that must be accounted for when looking for the ideal living room rug. Furniture style can also play a role in your rug selection.

As far as room space, living room rugs look splendid in just about any defined space. Their significance is more prominent in open spaces, though, serving as a means of defining such spaces. Now, let’s go over the different rug sizes to consider for your living room.

  • 11×13’: If the living room measures 12’x18’ or larger, an 11’x13’ rug is the perfect fit. This rug size is also perfect for open spaces. 11’x13’ rugs are able to accommodate a ton of furniture and décor elements. They can help unify a defined space or define an open space.
  • 8’x11’: If your living room measures slightly over 11’x13’, you should opt for an 8’x11’ rug. Such rugs are also suitable for open spaces. It’s also worth noting that this is the correct size rug for sectional couches. If you’re going to use this rug size in a defined living room, we recommend that you leave a flooring border around the rug measuring anywhere between 12” and 18”.
  • 3’x4’: Such small rugs are best suited for landing spaces that give entrance to a living room. 3’x4′ rugs serve as accents more so than defining elements.
  • 5’x8’: This is the perfect rug size for living rooms, measuring slightly under 11’x13’. Around 2 feet of flooring should be left around the rug to achieve the best layout.
  • 4’x6′: Rugs of this size may not be enough to define an entire living room, but they can be used to define smaller focal points within a living room, such as a coffee table or fireplace.

Dining Room

A dining room rug should be positioned right in the center of the room, underneath the dining table, to be more specific. The dining chairs should sit on the rug, not around it, even if you pull them out.

Ideally, your dining room rug should be larger than your dining table by around 30 inches. Let’s check out the different sizes available per table size.

  • Large Table: For larger dining tables with 8 chairs or more, consider buying a 9’x12’ rug. Such rugs are large enough to accommodate multiple chairs while providing enough wiggle room for them to be pushed back.
  • Medium Table: For medium dining tables with 6 chairs, the perfect rug size would be 8’x11’. However, you need to take the table’s shape into consideration in this case. For rectangular tables, opt for a rectangular rug. For rounder tables, opt for a round rug. This ensures a unified aesthetic.
  • Small Table: For medium dining tables with 6 chairs, the perfect rug size would be 8’x11’. However, you need to take the table’s shape into consideration in this case. For rectangular tables, opt for a rectangular rug. For rounder tables, opt for a round rug. This ensures a unified aesthetic.

Bedroom

The perfect size rug can help soften the acoustics within a bedroom for high-quality sleep as well as grant it warmth and coziness. Selecting the right size rug for your bedroom boils down to the size of your bed. Check out the following options.

  • King-Sized Bed: The perfect rug size for king beds is 9’x12’. It’s large enough to accommodate the bed and nightstands while leaving an underfoot space of around 2’.
  • Queen-Sized Bed: The ideal rug size for queen beds is 8’x11’. It can easily accommodate the bed and nightstands, leaving about 3’ of underfoot space on each side of the bed. You can also opt for an 8’ round rug for a queen-sized bed.
  • Full-Sized Bed: For full-sized beds, we recommend opting for a 6’x9’ rug.  Alternatively, you can put one 3’x4’ rug on each side of the bed.
  • 1 Twin Bed: Such beds go along perfectly with various rug sizes, including 8’x11’, 6’x9’, and 5’x8’. You can even put one 3’x4’ rug on each side of the bed.
  • 2 Twin Bed: The ideal rug size, in this case, is 3’x4’, positioned right in between the two beds. You can also use a 2.5’x10’ or 2’x8’ runner rug, depending on your design objective.

Kitchen

In most scenarios, placing a rug in front of the kitchen sink while being mindful of cabinetry and flooring is the best way to go. Check out the following options.

  • Large: Kitchens that are over 200 sq. ft. can accommodate a wide range of rug sizes, including 9’x12’, 8’x11’, and 6’x9’. Once again, it all boils down to your design objective. You can also implement smaller 5’x8’ or 3’x4’ rugs if you have a kitchen island.
  • Medium: Medium kitchens ranging from 100-200 sq. ft. can handle 5’x8’ and 3’x4’ rugs, depending on the layout you want to achieve. You can also implement a runner rug near the sink.
  • Small: Small kitchens that are under 70 sq. ft. can only accommodate 3’x4’ rugs. Larger rugs can very easily clutter the kitchen. Ideally, you should place the rug in front of the sink.
  • Long: Small kitchens that are under 70 sq. ft. can only accommodate 3’x4’ rugs. Larger rugs can very easily clutter the kitchen. Ideally, you should place the rug in front of the sink.
