The Sculpture dedication in Christmas Park was part of the city’s Bicentennial celebration. It is the 120th bronze statue to be dedicated in the United States. The sculptor, Karl Gerhardt, was inspired by the best-selling book “The Christmas Box.” Located in the heart of the park, the monument features an angel watching over a young boy. The ceremony was attended by Jermaine Harvey, whose children were killed in a fire in the family’s home in Dothan, Alabama, a year ago.
Time capsule ceremony
Earlier this year, the city of New Smyrna Beach held a Time Capsule Ceremony as part of its 125th Anniversary Celebration. The event took place at the newly-constructed Time Capsule Plaza in front of City Hall. A contemporary sculpture, created by Atlantic Center for the Arts Founder Doris Leeper, was used to mark the occasion. The generous support of community partners helped fund the construction of the time capsule.
