Springfield is a mid-size city located on the Connecticut River and is about 81 miles from Boston. The town was a center of industrial innovation and is now a regional health, retail, and financial center. The Springfield Rifle was developed in Springfield, and local inventors are responsible for the invention of the basketball. The city was originally a farming town but was incorporated in 1783. Its population grew rapidly from the mid-1700s to the mid-1950s.

Barstow’s Dairy Store

The barest burger you’ve ever tasted can be found at Barstow’s Dairy Farm in Hadley, Mass., a dairy farm in western Massachusetts that has been in the Barstow family since 1806. Located along rural Route 47, the farm is a colorful combination of agriculture’s past and present. Marketing and education manager Denise Barstow says the collective movement of the farm is a lively location.

The energy recovery facility at Barstow’s Farm enables the establishment to use waste food to power the entire farm. Currently, the farm collects food waste in the form of liquids and converts it into energy. The food waste is then collected and recycled to help support local agriculture. The bar’s sustainable efforts have helped the business to be recognized with a U.S. Dairy Sustainability Award, which honors outstanding dairy farms and businesses that contribute to the state’s economy.

Tanglewood

If you love classical music, you should visit the renown Tanglewood in western Massachusetts. This prestigious concert venue is home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has been a summer home since 1937. In addition to classical performances, the orchestra holds comedy, storytelling, audience talk-backs, and children’s programs. Whether you want to experience a live concert or take in a show, Tanglewood is a unique destination.

The festival draws visitors of all ages, from young couples to whole families, from children to retirees. I spotted twenty-something girlfriends walking beside an older couple in cowboy boots and carrying a L.L. Bean tote bag filled with fresh flowers and a baguette. The festival also has chair and cushion rentals. Guests are encouraged to relax and laugh while enjoying the show. For the best views, picnickers spread out under the stately Tanglewood trees.

The public high school in Longmeadow is one of the top performing schools in the state. This school’s lacrosse program has been around since the late 1970s, and the boys’ team has won 20 Massachusetts State Championships. The team has produced 36 All-Americans and six Academic All-Americans, and many of its alumni have gone on to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. Longmeadow is one of only two public high schools in Western Massachusetts to have a lacrosse program, which is why the school has such a rich tradition in the sport.
